7 Stylish Fall DIY Room Decor Ideas to try

It’s time to break out the Fall DIY room decor. Well, lemme say that a little different since I live in Florida.  The calendar says summer is over and it’s autumn decor time, but the weather here tells another story. In any case, if you’re excited to change up the house with a few DIY room decor projects, I have plenty of budget-friendly decorating tips and color schemes

Admittedly, I  don’t tend to over-decorate for each season (except Christmas).

Here’s a look at my fall home tour from 2019.

I’ve also rounded up a few inexpensive ideas to let you see a big picture. You don’t need a TON of items to turn your home from summer to fall. Just a few simple touches here and there can go a long way.

1. Work fall decor into your existing color scheme.

Don’t try to force a new color scheme into your home. If you decorate with pink and white, don’t rush out to buy a bunch of orange and brown for your fall decor. Take your time to find themed seasonal pieces that coordinate with what you already have. That way, you don’t have to change all your décor. Simply swap out small accessories here and there without a color clash.

TIP: Buy high-quality pillow inserts and change the covers for each season. This will save you money AND storage space throughout the year.

2. Shop Fall Decor Early AND Late in the season

While this may be a bit confusing, you need to shop at the beginning of the season for cheap dollar items like Target Dollar Spot and Dollar Tree. People who are NOT on a budget buy it up before you ever have a chance to count your coins. If you see them, buy them because they’re likely to be gone the next time around.

I like to sprinkle $1 pumpkins around and they sell out FAST!

More costly accessories at places like JoAnn’s and Michael’s and Hobby Lobby will run crazy good sales on their fall décor towards the end of the season. Just know 40% off is NOT a good deal for seasonal décor. You want to shoot for a minimum of 60% off by either waiting until the end of the season or until everything is at least 50% off and they offer a 15-25 additional percent off the SALE price. To earn those additional coupons, you’ll have to give up your email address or phone number, but the pay off in continuous coupons is worth it.

3. Your room decor should reflect you

Make simple tweaks to fall decorating ideas you find online to make them uniquely yours.

Ok. How many times have you seen painted pumpkins? A million right? And how many times have you seen painted pumpkins with candles? A million right? But the same for roses on Mother’s Day and garland on Christmas. It’s okay to NOT be 100% original, just add a little piece of you in there to make it yours. Use old family dishes, thrift store finds and whatnots to change it up just enough to make you happy.

You are creating a life of intention by decorating your home with love more than stuff. Yes, you want it to look amazing, but trust me, the stress of trying to keep up with Pinterest is not worth sacrificing your sanity.

4. Paint all the things

DIY fall décor and any décor really comes with a hefty appreciation for paint to transform the ordinary. As a lover of all things glam, my first choice is usually gold. But silver and other shiny metallics also make wonderful glam pieces.  For autumn decor, spray paint bottles, leaves, branches, and of course pumpkins.

I made these glam vases from dollar store foam pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns. Extremely basic supplies and extremely cheap!

Use small paint samples, craft paint and chalk paint and glaze to get the desired treatment.  The beauty of this method is you can often buy cheap Dollar Tree fall decorations to make your masterpiece.

The key to using paint for décor is to mix it with higher quality floral and fabric to achieve balance.

In other words, don’t buy cheap everything.

5. Try something new

Now tell me, have you ever thought about an animal print black and white and gold for fall? Me neither until I stumbled on that leopard print pumpkin. So chic and sophisticated without being intrusive.

6. Incorporate memories in your Fall DIY Room Decor

Without question, you want your home to reflect your experiences, values, and traditions. Create the environment to nurture traditions by incorporating memories into your decor. Add photos, keepsake boxes and stylish souvenirs to your bookcase, side tables, and mantles. Read these great ideas on how to incorporate memories into your decor.

I made these cute DIY Fabric Pumpkins and used them in several ways including my Thanksgiving Dinner Table. They are a great way to incorporate kids in creating decor you’ll actually use!

7. What to do if squash and leaves aren’t your jam?

You can still decorate for the fall even if you don’t get all theme-y.

  • Make small adjustments to your color palette by adding in warm rich accessories in fall colors.
  • Add a basket of pillows and throws to your living room to create a cozy feel.
  • Change out your everyday pillows for ones with heavier textures like linen, canvas, and velvet.

To make your home cozy for fall Incorporating some branches, grasses or greenery, plus a couple of beautiful pillows and throws in warm tones and textures, makes it easy to make a warm and comfy feeling for fall without sacrificing the design and integrity of your home decor.
